The Power and Limitations of Leipzig
The 1989 Monday Demonstration in Leipzig were manifestations of a productive collective intelligence. They will be described as an example of an imaginative, peaceful, well determined and effective political mass movement. Hence they seem to contradict Freud's basic assumptions about crowd psychology. On the other hand limitations of the political intelligence of the masses will be pointed out. These limitations are a result of normative and de-individualizing groups mechanisms. They will be discussed as being dtermined by the inhibition of self-critical and gulit-processing psychological procedures.
